Konopka gets 7 more years in prison The
Associated Press (as printed in the Green Bay Press Gazette)
MILWAUKEE ? A former Hobart man was sentenced
Wednesday to another seven years in federal
prison for taking part in damaging computers,
power plants and radio towers in Wisconsin.
Joseph Konopka, 29, was sentenced for convictions
of 11 felonies, including conspiracy, arson,
creating counterfeit software and interfering with computers.
Konopka, a former computer systems administrator
who went by the online name "Dr. Chaos," earlier
received a 13-year federal prison sentence in
Chicago, where he was convicted of two felonies
for hiding cyanide in a tunnel near the subway system.
Wednesday's sentencing was the second for Konopka
in Wisconsin. The first was overturned on appeal.
Prosecutors said Konopka and a group of young
followers were responsible for 28 power outages
affecting 30,000 customers and 20 other service
interruptions in 1999 in Northeastern Wisconsin.
Damage was estimated at $800,000.
According to court records, Konopka formed an
"anarchist group of boys" called Realm of Chaos
to do vandalism, computer hacking and other forms
of destruction for "entertainment purposes."
Konopka has been ordered to pay $436,000 in
restitution and spend three years on supervised release after prison.
