Hmmm.. let's see.  Millions of people complaining to Microsoft that 
non-Microsoft software won't work on their site.   For some reason, I'm not 
really very optimistic about that working.

All it would do (IMHO) is to steel them against the open-source (or 
alternative) software movements.  They'd just dig in deeper and roll out more 
"hooks" that have to be in place to use their stuff.

That's fine with me.  Let them self-destruct in their own self-inflicted 
monopoly.  At least one state has had enough of it -- Massachusetts allowed 
Microsoft to exclude themselves from a bid to provide office suite software 
for 80k employees state-wide.  (Here's a link to a long article on this topic

But I digress on a separate non-technical thread...
