[BC] QUESTION FOR THE

Run conservatively, rechipped, recapped 8000s with diff. input stages (or
Jensen Transformers) and good release time modules can blow away many DSP
based processors.

As Bob knows, the two weaknesses the 8000 had were the power supply and its
stereo generator. Both can be upgraded, resulting in a marvelous sounding unit
that is still quite loud.

The same is true of the 8100. I know of one station (AAA format) that tried
both an 8400 and an Omnia 6. They could have kept either but instead went back
to....

A rechipped, recapped pair of Texar Prisms and an 8100. This sounded better
then BOTH newer units.

Now don't get me wrong....I like DSP based units. They can sound awfully
good...BUT in this case with this format, older sounded better.

Of course, older equipment must be brought up to: "like new or better then new
condition". This includes replacing dried up electrolytics, using better
(newer) opamp chips, replacing older polyester and tantalum caps with
polypropolene or polystyrene ones (or even better, no caps and a servo).

Also, the units need to be properly re-aligned.

If this is done, however, the older equipment can still hold its own against
newer gear.

There are a few classical stations whose processing is in the Schulke
spirit. However, Schulke required first an Audimax/Volumax set up very
specifically, and later a slightly modified Optimod 8000, also set up very
specifically, and few stations are still using these. (I suspect there are
still a fair number of 8000s on the air.)

The good news is that, when set up conservatively, some of today's
DSP-based processors are capable of far more transparent sound than these
old chains.
