Au contraire, Dana - at least in this case. Chris Zerafa is the
current DOE for the CC/Cincinnati cluster, and even though he doesn't
have the historical (or even the RF) background that Paul Jellison
does (his background's in IT in the New York area), he understands
what he's got out there and takes a great deal of pride in it. One
idea that was discussed (and, for now, tabled) was to move the new
3DX50, when they get it, into a prefab structure behind the 1927
transmitter building, thus allowing the 1927 building to be opened
for more tours.
Chris and his crew out there have done a fantastic job getting the
old 500 kW monster cleaned up - the back room where it sits looks
much better now than it did when I first saw it in 1998. At that
point, Paul was just beginning to get the room excavated from years
of having stuff dumped there, and the ledge that runs along the
length of the transmitter was piled with unrelated gear. Now it's all
clean and neat, and a joy to behold.
I've seen a lot of transmitter sites in my travels. WLW is unique,
and thankfully, those charged with maintaining it know that and appreciate it.
