I'm a long-time DOS fanatic, however, I prefer MS-DOS 7.10, which includes
goodies like long file names and FAT32 support. You can get 7.10 in two
ways: the hard way, by installing Windows 98 SE and then stripping it down
to its DOS core, or by downloading an unofficial (read: non-Microsoft-
authorized) pre-packaged version of it from this web site:

Anyway, one of the most advanced DOS applications I've encountered is
MPXplay, an audio player whose interface is vaguely like a text-mode
version of WinAmp. It supports many audio file formats, including
aacPlus, MP4, Ogg Vorbis, and now even Windows Media Audio -- and it
supports many popular PCI audio cards. You can download MPXplay here:
