[BC] Farmville oldest transmitter

I just spoke with the front office at WFLO Farmville,
Va, and the woman who took my phone call said "Oh YES
! Big Bertha is still going strong !"

The engineers at Waltham, Mass would be very proud
that their 2300 pound RA1000 has covered nearly 60
years of airtime.

By the way, crazy ham radio operators continue to
rescue transmitters like this one, when they're put
out to pasture. Many of you have probably seen this
story by an SBE member in the Pacific NW.

I haven't worked him yet on the shortwave ham bands,
but I have worked the past few nights a Bauer 707 that
a ham in western Canada has moved up to the 75 meter
band.

In fact, while British Columbia to Annapolis was good
enough, he went on to talk with a station in Ft.
Lauderdale -- now that's a toss.

Here's how the old beast sounded as monitored in
Chicago:

Regards to all
