Motorola solved the problem of abrupt switching between stereo and mono by
incorporating a gradual stereo blend (much like that of most FM Stereo
tuners), and also eliminated the necessity of offering a manual bandwidth
switch by using an automatically variable IF and audio bandwidth,
depending on incoming signal strength and reception conditions. I
wouldn't be surprised if future IBOC receiver designs include similar
tricks to help make the transition between ~15 kHz digital AM audio and ~3
kHz analog AM audio less obtrusive.
