Rich, you are partly right and partly wrong. When it
came to HS sports, the medium and large markets just
don't have it. Talking about SMALL TOWN markets here,
not even small markets. 

The value of local sports, especially HS football and
a good team can be amazing. When Newberry HS didn't
make the playoffs for the first time in (I can't
remember) just not getting those extra games cost TENS
of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. 

High School football in the SE and deep south ( and
some areas also) ARE a religion into their own.
