You're making my point for the job of remastering older material for 
5.1. Which version gets updated? Listeners care because they have 
clear emotional associations with the music. PDs will care because it 
may not be the "official" version they played when it was released 
and made the charts. Don't play the LP version when stations 
originally played the radio mix.

Many buyers brought their albums back because it wasn't the version 
that caused them to buy it in the first place. This is going to be a 
very tough issue since there were often regional mixes. In some cases 
the regional mix removed "offensive" language. If a sanitized 
Baptist-country mix makes it to New York it'll be dull and boring. If 
the New York Satanic mix makes it to Baptist-country stations will 
incur a mini-rapture with a downward route. Like gasoline, each 
region has its own mix.
