I've always thought that being a weather presenter for the Weather Channel
on TV or for Accuweather or another radio equivalent must be as much a
tremendous education in local area pronunciations and geography as it is in
predictive meteorology.
Having had to vocalize and pronounce every single city in the country for
AOL's IVR system, I really pride myself on knowing as many local
pronunciations as I can (loo' uh vul in Kentucky, woo' burn in
Massachusetts, kee wah' nee in ill uh noy', etc.), and I wish that as you
all posted these things, you actually did what Sid did - add phonetics.
Maybe we could start a list, broken out by state, province and country -
I'll volunteer to put it up on my site, along with the ability for visitors
to correct them. Web site visitors love, as you know, to correct people. :)
You can send them to me directly as well.
David
