That's sure the case here in Sacramento. The TV stations,
especially the market leader, apparently have colluded to
"de-neutralize" speech in a big way. We now have weather
whiners who preface EVERY verb with "Let's go ahead and...",
say "tempachur" and "Cownee", drop most G's from -ing endings,
start far too many paragraphs with "Now" and generally make
one think all hiring is done from a single trailer park
somewhere in Missouri.
Hairspray-addicted anchors are no better. Even high school
radio people know whether a thoroughfare is an Avenue, Road,
Boulevard, Drive or Street. Not the case on TV.
Radio, on the other hand, still maintains some semblance
of professional speech patterns and understandable diction.
Radio, thank God, is still discernable from paging systems
in Home Depot and WalMart stores. Maybe it's because working
combo requires some amount of brainwave activity.
TV Anchor: "How do yuh make this go away?"
Engineer: "I'll flush it for you."
