When I was in first grade, one day the teacher asked us to bring in our
favorite records to play in class the next day. I guess she was expecting
us to bring in stuff like "It's a Small World" or the other kiddie-type
singalong records.
My dad was friends with a jukebox distributor, and he used to come home with
boxes of used 45s that his friend would give him. Most of them were nothing
I was interested in at that age, but some of the novelty records I would
latch onto and play over and over.
So, the record I brought to class that day was Sam the Sham and the
Pharoahs, "Little Red Riding Hood", which to me was the perfect record to
share with the class...fairy tale, a big bad wolf, etc. When I put it on
the record player, teacher jumped up quickly and said, "Oh, that's not what
we want to play for the class today" and grabbed it off the turntable. I
was stunned.
