Radio 227 is surreal at times. They just went from "Father Figure" by
George Michael to "Sixteen Tons" by Merle Travis. Now I'm hearing
"A Mansion on the Hill" by Hank Williams (Sr.) -- and just three songs
ago, they were playing Mariah Carey.
This sounds like a playlist that's more all over the road than Diana Ross
after a cocktail party -- but somehow, it clicks. It's entertaining.
It's amusing and light-hearted. Every time you listen, you hear some
familiar favorites, plus stuff you've never heard before, like beautiful
love songs sung in French and Italian. Lush instrumentals. Snappy
big-band, pop, and rock. And for now, a diverse blend of Christmas music
mixed in.
However, Radio 227 isn't just a web stream. They're a full-fledged radio
station in the Netherlands, with two FM transmitters. During the morning
hours (Europe time), they have live-read news, traffic, and weather at the
top of the hour. It's run by the same guys who operated an offshore
broadcasting ship in the '60s. Here's a bit of info about the original
Radio 227: http://www.cwgsy.net/private/offshorepirateradio/dolfijn.html
As of October 2004, it was reported that "Radio 227 is steadily increasing
its cable distribution and now reaches a total population of 4.2 million.
A live stream is also available on its Web site."
Radio 227 currently has a "Top 227" list on their web site which gives a
good sampling of the kind of music they play: http://www.radio227.nl
