Willie asked:
> And this differs from "Jack", how? (Serious question)
"Jack" is just an excuse to combine the playlists of several formats and
fire the DJs. So instead of hearing the same 200 songs over and over
again, you'll hear maybe 600 songs over and over again.
I have Philadelphia's equivalent of a "Jack" format -- WBEN-FM -- on at
work, and I quickly noticed that they play many of the same songs every
day. That's better than the AC station I had on before they went
all-Christmas, which played the same songs twice a day, every day, but
it's still a far cry from a truly liberated playlist containing thousands
of songs.
Admittedly, that's probably the reason why WBEN-FM is actually doing okay,
as compared to the laughable failure of WCBS-FM and other "Jack"-type
stations. Most of the music WBEN-FM plays is familiar, and listeners like
familiar music. And especially since WBEN-FM avoids current hits, they
don't play anything that most of their listeners have never heard before
in their life.
Besides, our "Jack"-type formats are squarely aimed at the 25-54 age
demographic, while Radio 227 targets 40+ listeners. That alone leads to
drastic differences in both their musical selections and their on-air
presentation.
And even more simply: "Jack" doesn't include country music in its
playlist.
Radio 227 does! (Seriously, that is a curious insight: if "Jack" can play
Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, and R&B, then why not Country?)
