With Sony's "forced stereo" receivers, the signal is received in stereo
mode as long as the AM Stereo decoder's PLL can lock onto it, regardless
of which system is in use. Even mono signals are received in stereo mode,
which provides a handy way to hear if any stations are suffering from IPM
(incidental phase modulation). When the Expanded Band was new, I often
heard signals from over 1000 miles away in full C-Quam AM Stereo using
only the built-in antenna of my Sony AM Stereo Walkman.
