Great question-- Associated Press has a big notice on their site saying you
can't use ANYTHING of theirs without written permission, and Time magazine
says the same. (Permission is often granted, but just as often they want
you to give them a fee for using the material.) But I am not sure what the
rule is for defunct newspapers or for materials from the early 20s which
the newspapers themselves may no longer keep copies of-- many newspapers
have been sold and have donated their archives to libraries (or just tossed
them out... sigh)...
