On the 12 inch Fairchild belt drives WRR had, (Don't recall the model  
number) occasionally the well holding the oil that the spindle was in would  develop 
insulating properities.  With the belt drive during the cold dry  months of 
winter I received a call about static popping on one of the  turntables.  I 
listened for some time and noted the static "pops" and  isolated it to one 
turntable.  I came in that night after the FM was  duplicating the AM and with all 
the speakers down could actually hear the static  discharge.  I blocked up the 
turntable and turned out the lights and could  actually the discharge.  A very 
small spark to the base which was  grounded.  Called Fairchild the next 
morning and the guy I spoke with said  change the oil and clean the well and ball 
bearing pivot.  I did and noted  a wax or grease type build up.  The pop went 
away for a few  weeks.  Called back got another service guy,  who told me to do 
the  same thing,  sent me some new oil and suggested that I scrape some 
graphite  pencil lead and drop some of the powder in the oil.  After about  three 
weeks of problems that fixed it.
