The heavy Fairchild tables _circa_1960 were the model 750 and employed belt
drive to the 36 pound platter (got a pair). They were a maintainance
headache in that the belt would break randomly and new belts only worked
well for a week or two and cost a small fortune.(751 was a 2 speed version)
With good belts, start-up was, amazingly, < 1/4 turn !

On the 12 inch Fairchild belt drives WRR had, (Don't recall the model
number) occasionally the well holding the oil that the spindle was in would develop
insulating properities. With the belt drive during the cold dry months of
winter I received a call about static popping on one of the turntables. I
listened for some time and noted the static "pops" and isolated it to one
turntable. I came in that night after the FM was duplicating the AM and with all
the speakers down could actually hear the static discharge. I blocked up the
turntable and turned out the lights and could actually the discharge. A very
small spark to the base which was grounded. Called Fairchild the next
morning and the guy I spoke with said change the oil and clean the well and ball
bearing pivot. I did and noted a wax or grease type build up. The pop went
away for a few weeks. Called back got another service guy, who told me to do
the same thing, sent me some new oil and suggested that I scrape some
graphite pencil lead and drop some of the powder in the oil. After about three
weeks of problems that fixed it.
