At WBAA in the late '50's we had dual motor 16" Fairchilds with 
aluminum platters that would have been suitable as a flywheel 
on a large truck engine. These were driven by two horizontally
opposed direct drive motors that tee'd into the drive gear at the
bottom of the shaft. At that time the programming was over 75% 
symphonic. I don't know what Ralph Townsley (CE) did to them, but 
they didn't rumble, and were three of the finest turntables I ever 
worked with.
