Boy, does the All-American Five bring back memories.
Mine had the octal-based tubes... 35Z5, 50L6, etc.  The
rest of the radio was so simple that some of us turned
them into tranceivers while in prison.  Pretty hot local
oscillators, and could be tuned to the 160m CW band.
The IF could be make to oscillate weakly to serve as a BFO.
The loop was fine for receiving, but most of us shunt-fed the
toilet/washbasin combo (each had a roof vent going up several
stories) against the springs of the drop-down cot.  The glow
from those filaments was the only light in Solitary.
