Close - in fact correct although they called it a
gated beam detector. :)
First used AFAIK is some super-secret UHF (if you call it the way
aviation types do - actually upper VHF) radios used in a double
demodulation scheme where an AM subcarrier was FM modulated on
a carrier in the 220 - 250 MHz range.
Later Sarkes Tarzian used it to build a cheap little table model
FM set in the late '50's that sold for $19.95 retail. In fact,
IIRC, the radio used a 12BN6 with series filaments. <g>
