I used to work there, and to my recollection it was nowhere near four
seconds.  Two at the most, at least for the "round robin" of
NY>Chi>Wash>NY.  It might have been four seconds from NY to LA, however.
 My first summer there, 1972, was the last year they used telco lines,
before the switch to satellite.
