The beauty of the FAA exams is that no matter if you get 100% on the
written you still must pass the practical exam. Then, you get to do it
all over again for a commercial, a multi-engine rating, and an instrument
rating. After that, most guys look for a place to build time until they
can go for their ATR (Air Transport Rating). If they graduated from one
of the accelerated schools, they get there a little earlier, but on the
lines, they have the seniority system to contend with, so by the time
they graduate from right seat to left seat, they have flown with several
captains and taken quite a few check rides with the Chief Pilot of the
line. The written tests only screen out those who are too dim to
absorb or memorize the ground school lessons. The real work is in the
practical tests and check rides so the fact that the FAA exam answers
are public and taught in one week wonder courses really doesn't bother
me too much.
I always thought it was unfortunate the FCC didn't follow the FAA
testing modes. It might have been a different world. Of course a
station off the air doesn't have quite the urgency or seriousness
as an air crash.
