I've used a few of the discount cards and for the most part they work great. The only drawbacks I've seen are having to dial the toll free number, a 10 digit pin code and then the number you want to call. If I could find the manual to my cheap phone I'd program the speed dial to take care of most of this. If you're at the end of the minutes on your card you generally have one or two minutes to say goodbye. They will cut in and warn you that you're almost out of minutes.
You also need to read the fine print...some of them have two access numbers to use...one is for the 1 cent per minute rate, but there's usually a connection fee charged which can use up a half hour of talk time or more. The other access number charges a slightly higher rate with no connection fee. I use that when the call is going to be short.
I like the fact that at the end of the month I'm not surprised by a huge phone bill because I got carried away talking to a friend or client.
