Well, the 4CX3500 (ditto the 4CX7500) is better than the 5CX1500, but it's
not as good as the 4CX5000, 4CX10000, 0r 4CX15000 and should have been
avoided in favor of the next larger tube

I once kept up a Gates FM-3-H which was a 3 kW. transmitter with a
4CX5000A tube. Never had much trouble. They also made a FM7.5H3 which
used the 4CX5000A. Smart way to do it. WHen I went to work at Collins the
5CX1500A was $395.00. The 4CX5000A was $595.00. Within two years the
5CX1500 was within $100 of the 4CX5000A and the tubes were giving everyone
trouble. The comments heard at the time was that Eimac lost the receipe
for making them when they moved their small tube plant from San Carlos to
Salt Lake City.
