They did. That's one of the things that Rick Sklar was a bear
about...having duplicates of everything. Two copies on cart of every
song available for airplay, two copies of all non-program matter
(jingles, promos, liners, commercials, etc.), two studios capable of
running the regular format (needing only a few seconds to switch between
them), two program lines to Lodi on non-duplicated routes, two
transmitters, two towers.
WABC and most of the other owned-and-operated AM stations in the ABC
group were some of the only ABC properties making money until the 1970s,
so it was in their best interests to make those physical plants as
reliable as possible. It is often said (not sure whether it's actually
true) that WABC's profits over about a five-year period financed the ABC
TV network's conversion to color.
