reference point   the tape sounds the same in both rooms

Good 4U.  I, however, am not happy with the phase shifts produced by most graphic equalisers and prefer instead to move the speakers with reference to the walls and floor to ameliorate any acoustic problems.  I don't worry about tuning out peaky speakers because I wouldn't want to buy them in the first place.
