Its hard to say exactly but any given night there is a large percentage of
phones left on.
Phones check in with the network to let the network know where they are from
time to time. Most operators set the update time to be every couple of hours
so that the network knows roughly where the phone is. In GSM systems its
call a Location Update message.
This is important for paging the phone when there is a call/message for the
phone.
