How many of these stations with ultra-high ERPs have patterns so
narrow that they don't really serve their entire metro area?

A quick look with AMSTNS shows KFXR 1190 Dallas-area 5 kW night
pattern with a 6 x 2 array so not in the running for max US ERP..

I show WCBM's 3 x 2 50 kW day pattern with a max of 6767 mV/m at 1 km.
That's a BIG array on 680 kHz with over half-wave spacing in the 3x
direction and it's only a few years old.  It shows up fairly well on
Google Earth 39-22-27 N 76-51-13 W  Only the 3 front towers are
painted in the photo.
