[BC] GPS for Proofing (WAS:dBm, dBc, dBd)

I had an older Garmin E-map purchased in '00. Used it to help find my way
around Miami before I had a built in unit in my car. Wife & I hooked it up
to a laptop with Delorme Map n' Go which we used on a vacation trip to VA &
NC. I purchased the hiking trail & topo program for it which I used in NC &
New England. It allowed me follow some poorly blazed trails with 100%
confidence. If nothing else you mark as a waypoint your starting point and
the unit "drops electronic bread crumbs" as you move. All else fails, you
just follow the breadcrumbs back to your starting point. Always carry extra
batteries. I lost the unit in late '04.

We got a good deal on a new Garmin GPSmap76CS at the Miami Boat Show last
February. It's color, has several times the 8 mb. storage of the old one
and it floats, runs 8 hrs on a set of 2 AA, can be read in brightest
sunlight. It serves as backup to the Raymarine E-series chart plotter on
the boat. We did not invest in any of the special software packages
available...but it did take the software from the old one...albeit a little
out of date. We use it mainly for exploring the towns & villages we tie up
at every night. It has a directory of useful shops, markets & places to eat
included with the base software. Gives name, address & phone...and push a
button & takes you to the address.

I tried using the older unit for survey work when I was with M-1/AT&T
BB...and it was useless for measuring distances...still needed the measuring
wheel. New one is no better.

 None, actually !
 ( well, there's a $10K surveyors package from Trimble, I think )

Well, I'm using ( under protest, and under VMWare ) Delorme Street Atlas
'cause
the maps are easier than Garmin ( who no longer does real time GPS in the
maps ) though
the accuracy in some areas leaves something to be desired, and a Garmin
hand-held.

Done it with various combinations. As long as you know the limitations of
the
equipment you're using, it doesn't seem to matter.

What is this talk of 'release'? Klingons do not
make software 'releases'. Our software 'escapes'
leaving a bloody trail of designers and quality
assurance people in its wake.
