Yes, due to LOTS of permits, traffic flow studies, FL DOT
internal environmental studies, etc. Steel was fabricated months ago
and is sitting in Chandler, IN (ERI's yard).
Current plans are to take the tower down with a "tower crane"
set in the right lane of traffic and the right shoulder. Riggers will
climb the tower with cutting torches, slice it off at a given level.
The crane will then grab the cut piece, swivel around and drop it into a
"mobile metal shredding unit". Much easier to shred on site and haul
off the remains to the recycler.
We could not take the tower down with a standard "Gin-pole" due
to the structural issues of the tower. Cutting and dropping the tower
would also be a no-no, both by structural issues (what side do you cut
on a 4 leg tower) and Coast Guard/Florida Department of Environmental
Quality.
New tower will be 4 sided for the first 40' or so and then it
will have a transition plate. The remainder of the tower will be 3
sided, to reduce the wind load. We will use the existing concrete
foundations (which is the reason to start with a 4 leg tower). Cost and
permitting delays to set another foundation in the water would have been
HUGE.
New tower design was specified by a gentlemen most of us have
heard of...he lives just down the bay from the site...Ron Rackly of DL &
R.

That they do.
I seem to remember that there was a summer 2005
plan for the tower changeout. This is pushed back?
