I'd get started now while you still have access to the equipment
resources. I made videotape
dubs to 3/4 and VHS, figuring I'd be able to play one or both after I
retired. I was pretty
certain I wouldn't have access to professional format videotape machines in
retirement and I was
correct. For audio, I still have a working semi-pro 1/4" open reel machine
and a couple of audio
cassette decks.

I kept the original tapes only as long as I had access to equipment that
would play them.
I think I have one two inch VTR that didn't get tossed and maybe a couple
of 3/4 inch
tapes, but that's mostly because they were buried in basement storage and
got transported
with everything else in my last house move.
