My grandparents had a '20's era console radio. One could crawl underneath
it a look at the cone loudspeaker. There was a thin rod protruding from the
apex of the cone which entered a magnetic assembly. Scratching the rod
amplified the scratch. Only a six year old (or so) geek would remember this.

I built a 'loudspeaker' from a headphone magnet and coil glued to the back
inside of a cigar box (remember those?? -ever so useful - NOT the cigars!).
I glued the metal headphone diaphragm to a piece of stiff paper and glued
that across the open box. Yes it worked. Yes it sounded lousy. Nonlinear much??

In the '60's there were sold flat panel rectangular styrofoam speakers
which actually sounded reasonable.

Then there was the first time I heard a Klipschhorn. That was truly my
'first time'. The other I barely remember.
