My approach in addition to virus scanner, firewall and what-have-you,
is to use MailWasher (free for personal use).
This is a program which can show you all your mail while it still
resides on your ISP. I have it display From, To_address, Size,
Is_Attachment? and a few other things. I have it set to mark all
mail for deletion and then have a "friends" list that over-rides the
deletion for senders and domains I know. The "friends" list doesn't
seem to be confused by fake "From" addresses.
I can then go through and examine the headers marked for deletion.
Most of these messages are very obviously spam and don't need
examining. No more than 10% of the headers need examining. The
nasties usually come from some weird place. One can read the whole
message in straight ASCII (safely) if you desire.
Yes, this takes a little effort, but I haven't had a virus even get as
far as the virus checker in a long, long time. One has to be very
careful to avoid deleting legit mail from unexpected senders......
Another advantage if you're on dailup is that you can avoid
downloading huge attachment unless you really want them.
My brother's ISP seems to do an excellent job at eliminating spam and
he's never had a virus.
KNOCK ON WOOD!!!
