It's only "too bad" if you are in a >100% tax bracket. (Which is, of course, 
impossible.)

In the real world, if you spent $600 and would get $120 back from Uncle Sam, 
you're still out $480. If you spent $300, and got $60 back from uncle Sam, 
you're only out $240. (Assuming a 20% tax bracket, and 100% refund.)
Therefore, spending more to get a "bigger deduction" is a *false* economy. 
You're still *spending more*.
