thanks Gary but I regret not getting the commercial license as it was the 
"coin of the realm" for the pros.   re the exp. date, yes i have always 
enjoyed that--it was from the days when there was still a (minor) 
distinction drawn between the operator license and the station license, 
which I think is no longer the case.

last year a visiting ham looked at it and gasped.  the issue date was before
he was born.    damn. getting Old.

Rob -

Your diploma certificate proves you passed the extra in front of an FCC
examiner, copied/sent 20 wpm CW and passed a written exam that I considered
more difficult than commercial elements 3 & 4 .  My hat's off to you!

BTW, have you ever noticed that the certificate is just an operator's
license and has no expiration date?
