Well, don't keep me hanging! What was the result? I've always been
afraid to try it because, by the time I reached an age at which I could
experiment and know (I hope) what I'm doing, I was always associate with
a licensed station in some way and didn't want to risk my livelihood.

Sheesh! Most of the places I've worked have almost always had someone
on staff wanting to file non-stop complaints against other operations
who were NOT violating the rules and regs (any more than we all
unwittingly do).

Now that you mention it, I do recall my dad getting somewhat upset at
me over an AM transmitter I once built with (I think) a 12AT7 as both a
Hartley oscillator and a plate modulated RF amplifier that was modulated
by a 6AG7 (I think). He came in and demanded that I immediately
dismantle it as he could hear it (according to his story) almost 20
miles away. I still think it was more the 50 foot top-loaded vertical,
however. I'm quite sure the 12AT7 wouldn't have handled much more than 3
or 4 watts (not including modulation). I also didn't get a chance to
personally observe the "big signal" as I was about 14 years old and he
wouldn't hear of leaving it "on" long enough to drive me around. Just
yelled and screamed and pulled the plug and yelled and screamed a bit
more...
