I made a 1st call on a media/marketing person at a local college last
week... she's got a radio background, so we had common ground.

She asked the same question about pre-Beatles, why the market wasn't there,
what "those people" listened to. My snap answer to her was that they're
listening to country music, and that it's probably full service country. My
folks are in their mid 60's, graduated in the late 50's, but they don't live
in the 50's anymore than I live in the '70's. It's Wyoming, it's always been
country for them, country songs generally have a recognizeable melody and
lyrics you can understand, and they're looking for what's between the songs,
too... local info, state news, the "whats-going-on" factor. They have no
patience for current pop, they're smart enough to get tired of strident talk
radio, whether it leans right or left...

Entertain them, inform them, be their friend, don't insult them, don't annoy
them...

It's not a question of Country=good, Oldies=bad... I run a full-service
country FM and a '60's/'70's oldies AM. And the marketing person agreed with
my quick assessment.

I know we've beat this horse senseless, but again... it really is an issue
of what's between the songs. When I think back to the stations I grew up
on... we locked in on KOMA and WLS and ignored the automated FM in town that
was playing the same music. It really was about the jocks and the jingles
and the fun. It's still got to be *interesting*, regardless of the format.

Rambling on, now...
