'Zactly where I'm headed. Never expected to get rich in radio, but I did
learn that if you 'Serve the Public Interest" well... your COL won't let you
starve, either...

then there's the boneheads that figure if they can't "get rich quick"
something's wrong...

The last station I was at, thought it had gone into ownership by a big
comany... still had enough impact in the local community that THEY in the
community took it upon themselves to take the FCC to task, as well as the
large company that bought out mom and pop, to keep "their" radio station
"theirs". It helped their case that the station was the only one designed
to specifically served the COL, and that for many years, it was a great -
nearly symbiotic - relationship.

then the "wonderful" GM showed up, signed the LMA paperwork... and in an
effort to buy the thing away from the LMA for pennines on the dollar...
insulted, shouted at, and generally pissed off every single business on the
ROS, plus most that had gone inactive with us. I still get calls from
individuals in the community.

The GM is now very very in the red, locked out of his own community (and
Chamber of Commerce), and refusing (last I heard) to pay his LMA bill.

I keep playing the lotto, and applying for business grants, and have
another trick or two up my sleeve...

what do we do?? It's very easy, and nearly impossibly difficult... just
give the community what they want.
You won't get rich overnight, but you won't starve either.
and you get to be involved in doing a LOT of good stuff for a LOT of neat
folks, and, have fun doing it, even if it IS a LOT of work.
