When NBC had Football years ago, it was done the same was it was done at
CBS. As the games ended each game had their own JIPed net. As they all ended
 the
stations were switched to their appropriate regional nets. It was a pain in
the butt and one I don't miss.
Planning would start around Thursday and not really be ready for air till
Sunday AM. We used to take a walk around 30 Rock before each broadcast
because
at that point we were in "cruise or crash" mode.

I did the first NFL game that NBC distributed by satellite and the last. I
was in charge of Skypath back in those days.

Yes, It was amazing that before the TV networks all went satellite all of
these regional split networks were all routed and set up by AT&T longs lines
as ordered by CBS and NBC. I know many times in Birmingham we could choose,
as viewers, which game our local was going to pickup by voting the week
before. AT7T would give us the feed that was voted on by the public.

After the networks moved to satellite distribution, AT&T stated using the
excess bandwidth for other services and suddenly switching and rerouting video
wasn't as readily available as before from AT&T. More satellite capacity
was needed.
