I grew up (for 4 years anyway) in Winfield, KS.  Don't recall Elmer 
Childress on KARD-TV. I do remember Cecil Carrier on KFH.

And Major Astro!  Whoo hoo!  I've never spoken with anyone else in my 
adult life who remembers him!  (We had a different name for him in 5th 
grade.)  Please post a Major Astro fan site!
