I remember back in the mid '50's when Soupy Sales was a local celeb on WXYZ
TV ch. 7 in Detroit doing "Lunch with Soupy. He also had an adult show at
night after the late news and it was a riot!

I remember growing up in Kansas and the weatherman got up and did the
weather during the noon news then played the piano for 15 minutes to fill
out the half hour from noon to noon thirty. Probably just as well. Elmer
Childress was his name. Wonder whatever happened to him on KARD-TV-3
Wichita. How could anyone forget.

Speaking of that he was sort of a local icon, there was another guy Major
Astro that did the cartoon show for the kids in the afternoon. I never
missed Major Astro in the afternoon. I searched on the net and find there
are still Major Astro fanclubs.

What other kind of local celebrities have there been? Every town must have
had one or two back in the good old days. Now no one stands a chance to
become some local celebrity on the cheap like that.
