Outer markers transmit just a bunch of dashes and lite up the blue lites on
the 3 lite marker beacon receiver. Middle markers are di dah (letter a) and
lite up the amber lite and inner markers are a bunch of dits and are rare
and are right at the beginning of the runway. Inner markers are used only
at large airports with very high category Instrument landing systems. Outer
markers and locater beacons are often co located.
Many of them use the old style "hammock" antenna that was popular on mw
years ago.

That's an outer or inner marker for an airport approach in the foreground
and possibly a LORAN NDB/VORTAC TX tower. Much like the one along I-290
here just north of the I-355/I-290 interchange.
This one is simply a WHOLE lot older.
Guys:
The short tower along I 290 in the west suburbs of Chicago is the co
located
outer marker
(they "Y" shaped antenna), and sends a dog-bone shaped signal pattern
upwards on 75 Mhz.
Outer markers are modulated with as I recall a 440 Hz. tone and a
dash-dash
pattern.
This illuminates the Amber OM in an aircraft passing overhead and indicates
OM passage.
Generally about 5 miles from touchdown point. In this case it is for the
Runway 9 Right approach.
The taller antenna 30-50' is the NDB antenna and broadcasts on 350 Khz. It
is called Deana!
It used to have avaition weather broadcasts but that was removed some years
ago.
The morse code identifier is ME.
I believe that there are only three of four of these still in service in
the
Chicago area, Ermine or HK at 335 Khz is out east of Roberts Road and just
north of 95th street. It is one of Midway's new approaches, Kedzi, MX 248
kHz. is out in a residential area south east of
Midway, and Taft just east of and on the property of Taft High school just
north of 90 west
and about 5 mile east f O'Hare's Runway 9 approaches. It is still on the
air
bot not on the Chicago sectional chart.
An old pilot.
