[BC] Magnetic Amplifiers

Did anyone read the article about "magnetic amplifiers" in the current Nuts  
& Volts issue?  I thought it was rather interesting, and it makes sense  in 
that they might be more reliable for high-power applications than tube  
amplifiers.  I found and ordered the US Navy's reprint and should get it in  about a 
month.  I might even build the project in the magazine if I can  remember my 
coil-building skills!
 
Has anyone here ever used magnetic amplifiers?  If so, what did/do you  think
