Paul,
    You are stirring up the cobwebs by mentioning mag amps. Worked with them 
back in the 50's and 60's in aircraft flight control systems while in the 
Air Force. They were fairly reliable but were severally limited in frequency 
response to the low audio range.

    Also ran across them in theatrical light dimming equipment of the same 
vintage.

    Transistors and other silicon devices pretty much put mag amps in the 
museum. They tend to be bulky, heavy, and slow. Haven't seen one since about 
1969.

    But then I have not seen the N&V article. Maybe there is a new slant on 
mag amps.
