You note resonated with me.  That 3rd order issue was in the back of mind
too when I asked a while back about the existence of any 2A +/- B mixing
charts for AM stations (especially in large markets).  You know better than
I that this is an issue as regards noise floors.

In IBOC, this will cause the AM noise levels to rise on non-IBOC stations,
and the cheap little radios that are not IBOC will have a more troublesome
time in tuning around.  

This is where good engineering will really have to shine and I think that we
are going to see some additional filters coming along, and you know it will
do nothing for RX overloading that is already common in large markets and
poor receivers.  Now, if we ever get to the point of having 100% digital
receivers, it too will be a problem because the 3rd order products will
appear as high FER% on the received signal, and conceivably, it will provide
decoding issues too.  SO there are artifacts all around no matter what the
mode.
