I knew you or another "big city" engineer would bring this up.  ;-)

I did crimp a lot of D Subs when the proper tools were handed to me. I 
installed a Wheatstone SP-6 console once; it came with the crimp tool, 
and, yes, all worked out quite professionally; although I still had to 
bring all those connections out to punch blocks.  Seemed easy in 1989. 
Now it seems like a lot of work!

In my engineering practice, I never seemed to have to install enough D 
Subs to justify buying the proper crimp tool.  Most equipment that comes 
with the D Sub mating connectors are supplied with the solder-cup type. 
  If you have to get them from Radio Shack, they're usually the 
solder-cup type.  So, there you go - my problem with Dsubs was never 
enough volume to do them right.

However, in arguing for RF-45's on Axia, I pointed out that MANY 
engineers don't have the correct crimp tools for Dsub pins.  However, 
EVERY Home Depot and Radio Shack has RJ-45 crimpers and connectors.
