Ditzy radio listeners (Re: [BC] TV news)

Here in the south, when schools close for bad weather, we get tons off
calls about if schools are going to be closed for that day or the next
day. They admit "THEY WON'T LISTEN TO YOUR STATION FOR THE INFO". You
are suppose to call the station to find out.

Some of us stations down here got together and decided we would simply
say when they would call......"We don't give that information out over
the phone, tune in to our station and you'll find out"!

There was one Saturday morning at WCAP in Lowell, Mass. when the
business line phone rang about 5:15 - before we were even on the air for

the day. (And yes, it got answered - you never knew when it might be one

of the Cohen brothers, the station's owners, at the other end!)

The slurry voice on the other end asked for information about the bus
schedule, which of course was NOT something readily at hand in the
newsroom.

"You're a RADIO STATION! What do you mean you don't have a bus
schedule?!?!?" *click*

Did I mention that the buses in Lowell didn't even run on weekends then?

There's something to be said for being enough of a community institution

that people will call at an ungodly hour, expecting an answer to an
utterly off-the-wall question. I bet Sirius and XM don't get those
calls!
