With -40 below wind chills and about a foot of new snow, the phone rang off
the hook last Thursday and Friday morning, wanting to know if school was
cancelled (it wasn't).

Between cracking the mic and trying to keep the website updated, I answered
them all myself. And I was thankful for every one of them.

Each one was a phone call that came to my station, and not to the rock
station across town. Every mom, every dad, every kid who called thought of
KKTY as the obvious place for that information.

I've spent 11 years turning around what was a horrible pair of stations,
working hard to earn the respect of my community.

And every one of those phone calls was a confirmation that I'm doing my job.

Radio stations work hard to create good product that people listen to... we
try to play the right music, the right jocks, the station van, the bumper
stickers. We work hard to earn each listener. Then, when that listener calls
the station with what they think is a legitimate question, we take that
moment of personal contact, insult them, treat them like idiots, tell them
to go buy a phone book and turn on their radio.

In 26 years on the air, I've answered a lot of phone calls on snowy
mornings. And I'm thankful for evey one of them.
