Instead of a song at sign-off, the first college station I ever worked
at took the usual (for that time) legal ID and statement of ownership,
and made a one-minute recorded play out of it. The female announcer
would be reading the script, but was interrupted by a male announcer
doing a rather convincing New York gangster voice. The gangster was
"breaking into" the studio, and said "Hey! What's goin' on it here?"
The female replied, "Just hold on a sec while I finish this," and kept
reading. The male replied, "No one tells me to wait, girlie! Maybe I
outta finish you off!" followed by the sound of machine gun fire. The
woman read the last line while gasping for breath, and just as she
finished she collapsed on the floor. The man, among the sounds of
sparks from the equipment (which was now, of course, supposed to be full
of bullet holes), said to himself, "Finally...peace and quiet. Hmm...I
wonder what this is." That was the cue to cut the carrier.
