[BC] AM Plate Modulation Concept

A friend of mine had a DX-100 with a modified modulator stage. I believe it
had a UTC transformer in it. The whole rig was modified for high fidelity. It
was flat from 30 Hz - 6 Khz. Sounded great when used with an RE-16.

Actually I was the one posting that statement. The DX-35 did use
controlled carrier AM. I bought, built and used one in the mid 1950s, so
I'm real sure about that. The DX-40 did also - it superseded the DX-35 in
~ 1958.

Below is a write-up I pulled off a Google search:

DX-35: Heathkit DX-35. Crystal-controlled phone & CW transmitter. 6146
final amplifier providing 65 watt plate power input on CW, with
controlled-carrier modulation peaks up to 50 watts on phone. Built in
modulator and power supplies, covers 80, 40, 20, 15, 11, and 10 meters with
a single band-change switch. Pi network output. Tubes: 12BY7 oscillator,
12BY7 buffer and 6146 final. Speech amplifier 12AX7, 12AU7 is used as
modulater. Panel control: switch selection of three different crystals
(reached through access door at rear). Panel meter indicate final grid
current or final plate current.
